At http://bizarrepolitics.com/ we write about untold stories behind the news. Many stories are not given their rightful place in the news.  The same applys to historical content. With the Soviet Union being our ally in World War 2, many accounts of that time still go untold. Stalin was responsible for more than 20 million deaths - including more than a third of the population of Lithuania.  Finally an author comes and sorts out the happenings in a Children's book.

When Ruta Sepetys learned about this tragic history, she saw it as her responsibility  to share this story with the world.  She does it in way that should reach souls deeply. Though she wanted share the story, she found she had to to in a fictional way.

"So many people told me, I'll tell you what happened but you have to promise not to use my name. They were terrified. Fifty years have passed but the pain was still so raw - Fifty years had passed but their hands were still shaking when they spoke."

Ruta Sepety's family warned that "the world just isn't interested in this story."  However, history unfolds in different ways. Here......

She tells the story about a teenager named Lina and her family after being forced by the Soviet secret police to leave their  homes and go to the labor camps in Siberia. The family ends up north of the Artic Circle where they endure hardships so extreme that readers are shocked to learn this novel is rooted in actual historical events.

During World War 2, many in the U.S. were taught to call Stalin - Uncle Joe while these events took place. Between Shades of Gray is a must read book.  Ray Tapajna, Tapsearch Com Top Pick Editor

Telling the story of the Baltic deportations during Stalin’s regime* through the eyes of a 15-year-old girl, this is truly one of the most harrowing historical novels you will ever read—and also a testament to human resilience. (Spoiler alert: There’s some romance, too.)  See interview of  Sepetys for BookPage’s April print edition. You can read the interview on BookPage.com, and watch a preview in this video:

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Sepetys' first novel offers a harrowing and horrifying account of the forcible relocation of countless Lithuanians in the wake of the Russian invasion of their country in 1939. In the case of 16-year-old Lina, her mother, and her younger brother, this means deportation to a forced-labor camp in Siberia, where conditions are all too painfully similar to those of Nazi concentration camps. Lina's great hope is that somehow her father, who has already been arrested by the Soviet secret police, might find and rescue them. A gifted artist, she begins secretly creating pictures that can--she hopes--be surreptitiously sent to him in his own prison camp. Whether or not this will be possible, it is her art that will be her salvation, helping her to retain her identity, her dignity, and her increasingly tenuous hold on hope for the future. Many others are not so fortunate. Sepetys, the daughter of a Lithuanian refugee, estimates that the Baltic States lost more than one-third of their populations during the Russian genocide. Though many continue to deny this happened, Sepetys' beautifully written and deeply felt novel proves the reality is otherwise. Hers is an important book that deserves the widest possible readership. Product Description

Lina is just like any other fifteen-year-old Lithuanian girl in 1941. She paints, she draws, she gets crushes on boys. Until one night when Soviet officers barge into her home, tearing her family from the comfortable life they've known. Separated from her father, forced onto a crowded and dirty train car, Lina, her mother, and her young brother slowly make their way north, crossing the Arctic Circle, to a work camp in the coldest reaches of Siberia. Here they are forced, under Stalin's orders, to dig for beets and fight for their lives under the cruelest of conditions.

Lina finds solace in her art, meticulously - and at great risk - documenting events by drawing, hoping these messages will make their way to her father's prison camp to let him know they are still alive. It is a long and harrowing journey, spanning years and covering 6,500 miles, but it is through incredible strength, love, and hope that Lina ultimately survives. Between Shades of Gray is a novel that will steal your breath and capture your heart.
